Our Story
As an attempt to overcome the setbacks of quarantine, we wanted to discover more of the city we live in—Shanghai. In 2021, living in the west of Shanghai, we planned a trip to the very east of the city—the sea. Harbors where ships come and go, and airports where planes come and go.
Pedaling through the heart of Shanghai gave us a unique insight into how the world progresses. Understanding the different tempos of life, seeing invaluable scenery, and observing different ways of living helped us build a passion and curiosity to explore further.
In 2023, James called the friends he had biked with to create a new organization—Bike in Shanghai—pedaling through Shanghai and its neighboring areas, journaling their trips, and sharing the information and photos they collected along the way.
As of September 2025, Bike in Shanghai has reached over 5,000 monthly visitors, supporting Shanghai cyclists with motivation to explore the city and its surrounding areas through our bi-monthly bike trip guide uploads. In total, we have saved over 250 kilograms of CO₂, working toward the goal of sustainability while enjoying the things we love.
